This Mother’s Day, Friends of Yates received a generous donation of household goods and food items from the Ray-Ann Memorial Foundation. The organization was founded by Gayle Williams, a mother who tragically lost two daughters during a domestic violence incident in 2017. We also received wonderful hand-made quilts that were lovingly made by the Wyandotte County Christian Church Piecemakers group. We want to give a huge thanks to these organizations for supporting our mission of eliminating domestic violence in our community.

Gayle Williams, the mother of Annalisha and Rachel Williams, who lost their lives during a domestic violence incident on June 3, 2017, is the Founder/CEO of The Ray-Ann Memorial Foundation. Board members include Drew Weston co-founder/President; Charlette Wafer, Secretary; Diane Wallace, Treasure; Dayle Rice, Project Manager; and Aja Byas, Fundraiser Coordinator.

What was supposed to be Annalisha’s 25th birthday celebration turned out to be anything but a celebration. Gayle received a call from her youngest daughter telling her that Rachel had been shot and both her and Annalisha were hurt. This call not only turned her world upside down, but it also hit the core of her spirit and her very existence was in question. Gayle was beyond confused and extremely afraid and shattered.

In the early morning hours on Saturday June 3, 2017, the ex-boyfriend of Annalisha arrived at her birthday party. An argument ensued between Annalisha and the ex, and Rachel tried to intervene to help her sister. He took the life of Rachel and Annalisha (who survived for 2 days and was declared brain dead on her birthday on June 5th).

Gayle described Annalisha and Rachel Williams as beautiful, free spirted, fun loving and kind souls who aspired to help everyone that they crossed paths with. Gayle established The Ray-Ann Memorial Foundation to honor her daughters’ memories and to bring awareness to domestic violence. Also, to be a “heard” voice for victims who often times are unheard.

Her desire is to form partnerships with DV shelters and other organizations, to collectively come together to help women and children in domestic violence situations. Gayle expresses that hosting events such as “All Mothers Matter” for Mother’s Day is a simple reminder and encouragement to the victims/survivors of DV, that they are NOT alone. Although they may not be able to speak up, we as a community will speak for them. Secondly, there’s a community, a village who understands, love and wants to help them get through this, as there is victory on the other side. And lastly, that they are loved! Often times, victims/survivors don’t see that, therefore they don’t believe that they are. But they ARE! The Ray-Ann foundation stands as a reminder for them to press forward and remain strong.
